SHURJOINT Mechanical System

The iconic 1920’s was the time where Shurjoints first mechanical couplings were created. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the mechanical couplings evolved and developed into grooved mechanical couplings. However, in the latter half of the 20th century the grooved couplings got revolutionised by specialised engineers.

The advanced and specialised engineers of Shurjoint used modern materials such as EPDM elastomers and ductile iron. These elite materials helped Shurjoints grooved couplings to reach new and improved levels.

A brief history of SHURJOINT

SHURJOINT first ever grooved couplings were created using malleable iron and their choice of casting material was used, the first grooved coupling was manufactured back in 1974.

However, the founders decided to switch the material of the coupling from malleable iron to ductile iron. Ductile iron was the quintessential material for the couplings, the dreadful heat treatment was not required as the material provided incredibly superior strength along with precision castings.

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) was the advanced synthetic rubber elastomer compound of the grooved piping system. EPDM was the ideal gasket material for the grooved piping system as this modern compound offered a service life equivalent to carbon steel pipes. In some unique cases EPDM even offered a service life longer than carbon steel pipes.

Over 3,000 individual piping components in sizes from ½” to 96” (15mm-2400mm) are produced by Shurjoint in a vast array of materials. These piping components are used with a variety of piping materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, ductile iron, PVC, HDPE, CPVC and copper tubing.
